The goal of this workshop is to develop the participants’ visual vocabulary with the ultimate aim of clearly and specifically using landscape as a vehicle for self-expression.  We will discuss advantages and methods of painting the landscape on location using direct observation, as well as painting landscape in the studio, using photographic references.  Instruction will be given in a variety of methods, including group teaching, instructor demonstrations, in addition to individual instruction.

Topics will include selection of a subject, simplification and editing, drawing and composition, value, color, painting techniques, and using the elements of design to convey ideas that are important to you.  We’ll be oil painting outdoors in various locations in and around the ancient city of Civita Castellana in the mornings.

Class will meet for 4 hour morning sessions, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday. Afternoons are free for independent plein air work or further developing paintings indoors, as well as one on one evaluation and instruction as wanted. Thursdays we will join all participants in JSS in Civita for an exciting bus excursion to one of Italy’s important art centers.  Students are encouraged to attend weekly faculty and resident artist slide lectures.  Monday evenings we will join the entire JSS Civita group for a communal meal at one of the local restaurants.
