SPACE and IMAGERY – Exploring Painting With the Landscape
July 28th – August 11th, 2014
When before the motif, how will you paint it? We all have a visual vocabulary, but what determines its uses?
In this workshop we will explore space as the structure for pictorial imagery. Each element of painting will be considered a spatial construct that can be used to compose a response to the motif through painting.
We will discover a variety of spatial ideas through the history of painting with analyses of painters from the Middle Ages to Post Modernism. These analyses will equip us with a multitude of pictorial ideas as we view the landscape through our contemporary lens.
We will work in oil paint from the landscape, in multiple conditions of light and weather. We will have time for both alla prima paintings and paintings that require multiple sessions. The alla prima paintings will be used to work out our pictorial ideas broadly and quickly. Often, it is good to have multiple surfaces on hand to rapidly move from one idea to another. As it stands in the game of darts, so it does with painting, often it takes more than the first throw to hit the bulls-eye. We will use multiple sessions to analyze and refine our paintings once we have a handful of pictorial ideas and motifs to work from.
Our workshop meets:
For Painting: Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday mornings, 9 a.m.- 12 p.m., late afternoons, 3p.m. – 6p.m. (no afternoon painting session on Saturday)
For Lecture: Monday mornings, 9 a.m. – 11a.m.
For Critique: Saturday afternoon, 2p.m. – 3p.m., or until finished. This will be a time to step back, appreciate and discuss the variety of artistic expression and intention each of us add to the larger conversation of painting. (There will also be multiple one-on-one critiques for each of our painting sessions.)
On the days and times we do not meet, I would like to encourage you to experience Civita Castellana, look for motifs that interest you, and of course draw and paint! There will also be a studio/classroom that is available for use outside of scheduled workshop hours.
Thursdays are free for bus excursions and evening slide talks by faculty.
I look forward to working with you!
