In The Path of Corot: The Italian Landscape in Encaustic

Course Overview:

This is a two-week session of painting with a focus on the landscape using the ancient medium of encaustic, the hot wax process.* Those with painting experience at various levels of accomplishment are welcome. Civita Castellana and the Roman campagna offer a rich and varied landscape where participants will be encouraged to discover the expressive potential of encaustic painting, while developing their sensitivity to qualities of light, space, form and mood.

The Course:

Participants will receive a thorough grounding in the encaustic process from the basics to the more complex in a sequential manner. Studio demonstrations in making your own encaustic paint; preparing various supports; opaque, transparent and impasto techniques, and the possibilities for a final varnish, will be among the topics introduced and developed, ensuring a solid foundation from which to achieve one’s own “voice” in encaustic painting.

By approaching the motif as pictorial space and seeking to work from the “general to the specific” we will first create premier coups paintings (in oil) and sketches/drawings from direct observation. These studies will form the basis for more sustained compositions in the encaustic medium, allowing for observation, memory and invention to inform the completed work.


Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday:  4-hour morning session.

Lunch break

Afternoons:  free for independent work and/or one-on-one analysis of works in progress.

Thursdays are free for bus excursions that will include – Piero della Francesco Tour of Arezzo, San Sepolcro & Urbino, Rome, Florence, or Bologna.  Also included are side talks by Faculty.


Encaustic is a beeswax-based paint that is kept molten on a heated palette. It is applied to a surface and reheated to fuse the paint into a uniform finish. The word encaustic comes from Greek and means to burn in, which refers to the process of fusing the paint. Encaustic has a long history, but it is as versatile as any 20th century medium. It can be polished to a high gloss, it can be modeled, sculpted, textured, and combined with collage materials. It cools immediately so that there is no drying time, yet it can always be reworked. The durability of encaustic is due to the fact that beeswax is impervious to moisture. Because of this it will not deteriorate, it will not yellow, and it will not darken. Encaustic paintings do not have to be varnished or protected by glass.

Encaustic paint has no toxic fumes, nor does it require the use of solvents. As a result, a number of health hazards are reduced or eliminated.
