Patterns of Thought: The Human Landscape
June 15th – 29th, 2015
Join me for this 2-week intensive where I will share my practice of gathering color data from the observed world and using that data to develop larger, invented studio paintings.
Our starting point each day will be a rigorous application of color theory in painted studies from the incredible surrounding landscape. These studies will help us build an intimate vocabulary of color relationships and mark-making as we respond to the natural forms and changing light of our environment.
Our course will coincide with an excursion to see the great fresco cycles of Piero della Francesca in which his dynamic patterning of figure-ground relationships will further guide our discussions. During our afternoon sessions, students can choose to continue working from the landscape or to make figure studies from the life model. In the studio, we will combine multiple landscapes and figurative elements into larger, composite paintings that tackle the poetry of our experience.
For the past 3 years I have been leading Plein Air Painting Tours in Spain and Portugal and these experiences have profoundly influenced my artistic practice. I believe that placing ourselves in new environments and grappling with the particular color relations of that place is a clear and definite way to develop a meaningful dialog with the self. Working in the historical, Arcadian landscape of Civita will give us the opportunity to reflect on our own placement in time, and to create images that record the personal patterns of our perception.
Weekday Sessions will Include:
