I’m very excited to be participating for the seventh time in JSS in CIVITA Summer Art School and Artist Residencies in Italy.  New insights come to light every year when I’m confronted by the pictorial treasures that I find in Civita.  The rich surroundings of culture and art awaken in me ideas which can guide and enrich artists, students, and art lovers.  It touches everyone with a passion for art on any level.

This year I’ll be offering two different courses, a 2 or 3-week option:

  1. A fully supervised and instructed Affiliate Workshop focused on plein air painting in and around the historic center of Civita Castellana.

This workshop will focus on learning pictorial language through “premier coup” oil painting exercises and will emphasize perception of light, how to find a motif, design of the format, mixing colors on the palette as a scale of relationships and values, and blocking in relational color.

There will be demonstrations on each subject throughout the course and daily group critiques.

Weekly schedule:

Sunday and Monday:  morning classes, 8-12 a.m., critique 12 – 1:00.

Tuesday and Wednesday:  afternoon classes, 4-7:30 p.m.  Critique before class, 3 p.m.

Assignments will be given to enrich the dialog with the tradition of painting through its history.

In addition to the weekly excursions on Thursdays, we will have a full drawing lesson for one day in Rome.

July 10th, 8:00 AM – 11:00 AM, Drawing Demo (quick and extended drawing)

July 16th, 8:00 AM – 11:00 AM, Monotype Demo

July 17th, 8:00 AM – 11:00 AM, Painting Demo

  2.  Guided Residency

The new Guided Residency is designed for the participant who wishes to work independently as a resident but would like periodic feedback on their work. This venue permits the artist his/her individual space and needs to develop but offers the reinforcement of critique and dialog at intervals during the residency .

I will review portfolios submitted with the online application form in order to customize the program for each individual.

Meetings will be held individually on Monday afternoons, 4-7 p.m. and Wednesday morning 8-11 a.m.  There will be a group meeting on Friday, 2-4 p.m.

July 9th, 8:00 AM – 11:00 AM, Drawing Demo (quick and extended drawing)

July 16th, 8:00 AM – 11:00 AM, Monotype Demo

July 17th, 8:00 AM – 11:00 AM, Painting Demo
